What is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)?
At Bianco Primary Care, Dr. Malachi Groover offers Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), a hands-on approach to healing, mobility, and whole-body balance.
This form of care is used to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness or injury by restoring proper alignment, movement, and function throughout the body. Using gentle techniques that work with the muscles, joints, and connective tissues, OMT helps relieve pain, improve mobility, and support the body’s natural ability to heal.
What types of conditions can OMT help with?
Because Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) works by improving the body’s overall structure and alignment, it can effectively help relieve many common sources of pain and muscle tension, including:
Overall mobility & function
Circulation
Back, joint & neck pain
Sinus or breathing problems
Headaches & migraines
Sports or work-related injuries
Pregnancy related discomfort
Muscle tension & poor posture
Recovery from illness
Frequently asked questions
-
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily — for example, athletic or yoga-style attire. Try to arrive a few minutes early to review any recent changes in your symptoms. You don’t need to fast, stretch, or do anything special beforehand.
-
OMT (Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment) is a hands-on approach used by osteopathic physicians (DOs) to diagnose and treat the body’s structure and function. Using gentle techniques such as stretching, pressure, and subtle movements of the muscles and joints, OMT helps the body restore its natural balance and ability to heal.
Unlike chiropractic care, which focuses mainly on spinal adjustments, OMT is used by fully licensed physicians who can also address medical issues and integrate it with your overall care.
It’s also different from massage in that OMT is more focused on medical diagnosis and body mechanics rather than relaxation or soft tissue work alone.
-
Your physician will begin by talking with you about your symptoms and performing a physical exam.
During treatment, you’ll remain clothed (wearing comfortable, flexible clothing) while the doctor uses gentle pressure, stretching, or guided movements to improve alignment, motion, and balance.
Most people find OMT relaxing and leave feeling looser, lighter, or more balanced.
-
In our direct primary care model, OMT visits are typically billed separately as a unique procedure.
For members, this service is provided at a reduced in-office rate. If you’re unsure, just ask at your next visit — we’re happy to clarify what’s included in your plan.
-
OMT isn’t just “extra time” during your appointment — it’s a specialized medical procedure that combines deep knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, and gentle hands-on techniques to help your body heal and move better. By keeping OMT as a separate service, we can continue to offer it at a high standard of care while preserving the access and flexibility that our DPC members value for their regular medical visits.
-
Yes. OMT is a safe, evidence-based practice when performed by a licensed osteopathic physician. Your doctor will tailor the treatment to your comfort level and medical history, avoiding techniques that aren’t appropriate for you.
-
It depends on your condition and goals. Some patients feel better after one session, while others benefit from a series of treatments spaced out over several weeks. Your DO will work with you to create a plan that fits your needs.
-
Absolutely. Because OMT is part of your overall medical care, it can safely be used alongside medication, physical therapy, exercise, or other treatments your doctor recommends.
-
Most techniques are gentle and comfortable. Occasionally, you might feel mild soreness for a day or two afterward — similar to how you might feel after stretching, massage, physical therapy, or yoga — but this usually fades quickly.
-
OMT is performed only by a licensed osteopathic physician (DO) who has completed medical school, residency, and additional hands-on training in osteopathic medicine and manipulative techniques.
